Ultimate Frisbee was invented in 1967 at Columbia High School, Maplewood NJ. The first offical rules of the game were recorded in 1970. Called the fastest growing sport in the world, Ultimate is now playing in more than 42 countries, by hundreds of thousands of players.

Locally...

A couple of NBTel employees named Charlie Cook and Jerry Carr first started Saint John Ultimate by inviting co-workers out to the field after work during the summer of 1997. From these humble beginnings Saint John Ultimate has grown steadily over the past 12 years and now includes over 50 full and part time members, a summer league, a competitive tournament team (SCUM) and a thriving development program.

Charlie and Jerry had played Ultimate Frisbee in Toronto and upon their return to the Maritimes, they began to teach others the secrets of the “flick”, the “hammer” and the “stack”. The first of their progeny included fellow NBTel employees Tom Wynn, Curtis Cox and Diane Woods. In those first two years it was difficult to get turnouts of more than six people, but even in the face of small turnouts and a field that was more rocks than grass, the “Hard-Core Original Four” began to spread the word of their new found sport to others.

During the second year five brave souls ventured from their native fog to play on the sand at the illustrious Parlee Beach Tournament in Shediac. There they teamed up with some folks from Wolfville to form a team that would go on to win the spirit award in their very first tourney. As a result of this tournament, then new player Walid Ismail was firmly hooked on the game of Ultimate.

By the third year new faces began to appear from all over Saint John. More women were getting interested in the sport as well. Saint John Ultimate had enough players to form a team of their own and thus was born the team named SCUM (Surf City Ultimate Machine). In the following years, SCUM has grown into a highly spirited team who have won 3 spirit awards and continue to improve their playing skills on the field, while blinding opponents with their shinny jerseys.

What’s on the horizon for Saint John Ultimate? SCUM will continue to improve their skills under their drill master Scott "Bulldog" Underwood. SCUM will hopefully journey outside of the Maritimes next year to share their “SCUM Bucket” with other teams across the country. The league will continue in the coming year as well as an indoor league during the winter through RNS. Scott will continue to provide instruction to new players during the Pick-Up night in an attempt to get more Saint Johners interested in playing the great old game of Ultimate Frisbee.

See you on the fields.
