UNB Fredericton Ultimate

posted Aug 31, 2009 4:04 AM by Marcy MacLeod

The UNB (Fredericton) Ultimate Frisbee Club is looking for male and female Ultimate Frisbee players, both NEW and experienced. Yes, that’s right - for those of you that played other sports in high school or thereafter, tried out for the Varsity Reds but got cut, etc., - we want you! All students welcome (UNB, STU, NBCC, etc.), so bring your athletic friends! The emphasis is on training/skill development and putting your athleticism to work at tournaments this fall and in the spring.

The team will be playing, practicing, and travelling to other schools in the Atlantic region to compete against Co-Ed Ultimate Frisbee university clubs. Participation at Canadian Eastern University Ultimate Championships and sending a crew to Canadian Nationals is also a possibility.

The club’s strong and mighty leadership includes Darren Clark, player for 6+ years in Fredericton and Waterloo at the national level. Darren brings to the table experience as both team captain and coach on the co-ed scene. Wendi Brown first picked up a disc in ’96 and has followed it from Victoria to Vancouver to Tokyo, and recently to Freddy Beach. She has played with and against some of the top teams in the country. Both Darren and Wendi are keen to develop new players into the game and to build the university Ulti scene here in Fredericton.

To get more details on upcoming practices and tournaments, commit to attending the first practice TUES, SEPT 8th, and/or throw your name on the roster email us at UNBultimate@gmail.com. Also, join us on Facebook at UNB Ultimate. Practice begins the week following FROSH WEEK…see you there!

Summer League Champions

posted Aug 30, 2009 11:14 AM by macleod.marcy@sourceatlantic.ca

Congratulations to Blue Steel who defeated the Disc Junkies on Tuesday night to become the 2009 SURL Summer League Champions!

Thank you to all of the teams who participated in a great summer. SURL looks forward to a great Fall and Winter league in the coming months. We have received many suggestions on how to improve the league moving forward and are anxious to implement these changes to make Ultimate the best sport Saint John has to offer.

Stay tuned for new updates!

League Year End Party

posted Aug 25, 2009 6:50 AM by Marcy MacLeod

The League Year End Party is going to be this Friday, August 28 at the Uptown Diner (Smoothy's) on Charlotte St.  Everyone from league is welcome as well as their girlfriend/boyfriend/wife/husband/man crush/etc.

Starts at 7pm.  There will be some light snack foods and they're offering us drink specials ($3 beer and shots).  If you're interested in a meal. They've got an all you can eat Roast Beef Special (you have to let them know in advance if you'd like this) and other deliciously greasy bar food. The kitchen closes at 8 so be sure to be there around 7.

The best news of all??  It is karaoke night!

Saint John's "Lucy"

posted Aug 19, 2009 11:51 AM by Scott Underwood

No, I don't mean Lavoie for those that know her, nor do I mean the Beatles.  I mean Lucy, the first human remains discovered (who interestingly was named after Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds as it was playing on the radio at the time of discovery).  Australopithecus afarensis

Charlie Cook found the first ever Ultimate disc used in Saint John in 1996, and sent through a picture of it.  Here you go for for anyone interested in the flatball that started it all.
